There’s nothing quite like some well deserved beauty sleep, am I right? But, if you’re anything like me and you switch on late at night and have to be up for seminar’s in the morning you sometimes need to ‘fake’ well rested skin…
I’m going to be honest with you (aren’t I always?). I’ve never tried an overnight face masque before I was gifted this one to try from Dr. Botanicals* so I was really excited to see how it matched up to regular face masks.
Firstly, I feel the need to point out that I am an oily skin type. I suffer from the occasional break-out and always have a shiny looking T-Zone. This masque is actually recommended for dry skin. However, it worked well on me and hydrated my skin without drowning it. Secondly, here’s a little bit of info about Dr. Botanicals! I’ve began to feature Vegan and cruelty free brands much more prominently on my website. It’s because I believe that beauty products don’t need to harm, or even come from, animals to make a difference to your look. Dr Botanicals is a Vegan and naturally sourced brand. So if we share the same concerns for animals then you need not worry. The ingredients in this mask are also all paraben and harmful preservative free. Therefore, if you have sensitive skin I imagine you’d be fine with this brand!
Onto the mask! After cleansing and patting my face dry I took some of the masque out of the pot. I was definitely expecting a thicker consistency but the masque is actually more like a moisturising cream. I popped some on my face in the same way I apply my serums/moisturisers. When I was finished you could see the product on my face but it wasn’t a thick, heavy layer. The masque smells mainly of one of its ingredients; papaya. It smells fruity but not overpoweringly so. It’s just right and smells very fresh. The masque also contains jojoba oil and sweet almond oil which I could smell a little hint of!
With the masque on my face I headed to bed at a reasonable time but woke up around 5am (not unusual). I took the masque off in a sleepy haze when I woke up (for real this time) a few hours later. When I took it off I could definitely tell the difference it had made to my skin. My skin didn’t feel greasy at all, in fact it felt very smooth, almost as if the masque had stripped any nasty dead skin cells off my face during the night. My skin also felt firmer, but not uncomfortably taut. The masque definitely made my skin look well rested, hydrated and renewed.
When I read up on the ingredients I learned that Papaya is used to boost skins radiance so I had that to thank for the fact that I looked awake, even if I didn’t feel like it. The jojoba oil gave my skin some elasticity too whilst the almond oil was to blame for making my skin as smooth as a baby’s bum (thanks almond oil!).
The only negative thing I can say about the masque is that, if you’re a light or fidgety sleeper as I am you may get a little transfer onto your pillow which can make your face and pillow a bit of a sticky combination. I took to putting the masque on the front of my face but leaving the sides of my cheeks, close to my ears bare. So that when I did toss and turn there would be no transfer and I wouldn’t get a little sticky to my pillow. But that negative is only if I’m being really, really nit-picky. Would I buy it for myself? Yes, definitely. It’s pricier than a usual masque but I’ve used it over five times and have not made a dent in my tub. Plus, the tub is really cute, don’t you think?
I’ll be using this baby a lot as my dissertation deadline is in two short weeks so my skin is definitely needing some TLC because my sleepless nights are not doing it any favours! Are you guys a fan of overnight masques? How do you think this one from Dr. Botanical’s sounds? Let me know in the comments what your favourite face mask is!
