London is one of the most visited cities in the world; a focal point for the world politically, economically, and culturally. While London is a tourist hotspot so wonderful that some travel thousands of miles to visit. As a Londoner, however, you’ve likely been absorbed into the city, the everyday hustle and bustle of life in the capital, and you’ve overlooked so many of the things that tourists flock to do and see. I’m absolutely criminal for this and have to be reminded just how gorgeous the city I live in is.
That’s a shame really, isn’t it? You live in one of the most incredible cities on earth, a glistening metropolis, but you don’t ever really see it through the wide eyes of an awestruck tourist. Sometimes, this is deliberate; many Londoners are dismissive of certain trips and events, deeming them “touristy”– but sometimes, it’s nice to be a tourist, to see the city through new eyes, and experience all the unique-to-London experiences that make the capital what it is.
So, Londoners, what tourist-y things should you tick off your list this Winter season?
Staying In A Gorgeous Hotel
London is renowned for its hotels; there’s options to suit literally anyone, from inexpensive B&Bs in Hillingdon right through to luxurious hotels in East London that offer a taste of the high life. It might seem odd to consider staying in a hotel when you already live in the city, but it’s actually the perfect solution for a city break in your own country. You can enjoy the amenities, be close to key attractions, not have to worry about anything domestic, and you can pop home if you forgot to pack something– perfect!
I’d highly recommend a hotel called The Sanderson. It has a fantastic themed Afternoon tea and the rooms are just amazing. I stayed in a suite with my parents for my graduation and the bed was the comfiest thing I’d ever slept on. I wonder if they’d answer if I asked them where they get their mattresses from?
Ice Skating At Marble Arch
Of all the Christmas traditions in London, this might be the most touristy of them all; but it’s an experience that everyone should try at least once. The rink is large, the surrounding area is gorgeous, and there’s a real pleasure to be had from a few hours whizzing around the rink with your friends and family. Plus, it’s right next to Winter Wonderland which is a fab day out. I went there last weekend with my boyfriend and I absolutely loved it.
