Fuerteventura is close to my heart. It was the first place I ever went on holiday and I’ve been back plenty of times since. Last year I went with one of my friends Rebecca and my parents and for my birthday in April I’ll be taking my boyfriend Jay. I’m so excited to show him the best Fuerte has to offer as it’s one of those places I know I’ll always be returning to, even when I have kids myself.
There are lots of package holiday options to choose from From Holiday Gems, or Thomas Cook if you find it easier to book through an agent or opt for a package (me and Jay have opted for this this time as they just had much better deals on offer!) or you can research cool Air Bnb’s to rent if that’s more your thing. Be careful though as you may end up spending double the amount you would than if you’d booked a package as flights themselves to Fuerte can cost around £200-250.
Where to Stay
I’m an expert on Corralejo which I would say is the main town in Fuerte, there are others such as Costa Calma but it’s not as nice nor as big as Corralejo. I will say that Corralejo isn’t huge, it’s big enough for a week away where you can relax, shop a bit and have great food and nightlife. Anything smaller and you’d be struggling for things to do which is why I tend to avoid Costa Calma.
I’ve stayed in all of the main hotel chains in Corralejo and have to say that Lobos Bahia is my favourite and the Blue Bay comes a close second. The Blue Bay changed itself to an adults-only hotel around two years ago along with its new name Corralejo bay. Lobos offers model and spacious rooms with really white interior decor. It’s where I took a bunch of bikini selfies last year as the lighting was just too good – haha! The hotel is also all inclusive so your food is sorted saving you money whilst you’re there, however, you will be missing out on a few good restaurants. If you know which ones to go to then it doesn’t matter too much that you miss your all inclusive for a couple of nights whilst you’re there as the all inclusive option will still save you money. There are also a lot of self-catered options such as Caleta Playa apartments. They’re good if you’re after a super quiet, adult holiday as there isn’t a huge social area and it’s very private.
Where to Eat
My favourite place to go for food on the island is the Italian restaurant Il Diavolo. They make amazing, authentic pizza and pasta. The lasagna is one of the best I’ve ever had and the pizza’s are always a great option. The restaurant is situatied half underground and half outside, so you can still get the fresh air and sun whilst enjoying your meal.
Vegan & Vegetarian options in Corralejo, Fuertrventura
The Citrus Surf Cafe is a great place to go for lunch or cocktails. They offer veggie and vegan options as well as your standard meat ones. You’ll find a lot of healthy options like wraps and salads and sandwiches. It’s a great option if you fancy going out for lunch for an hour or so. Murphy’s Irish Pub offers a fab English Breakfast in the morning if you’re particularly missing home and Waikiki beach bar is a must visit for a banana split!
Things to Do in Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura is very much an active island. It’s full of windsurfing, kitesurfing and island exploring. There are active and dormant volcano’s that you can book a hike up to. Lots of surfing schools that you can sign up to for the week or day. It’s also a great idea to rent a car for the day and explore the smaller villages in the island. El Cotillo is a small and cute little surf town that’s great to relax in! Fuerte does have a lot to offer, so it is a shame if you don’t make the most of it. My boyfriend has also discovered that there’s a Jiu-Jitsu school on the island and classes are only 5Eur!
Fuerte also has gorgeous beaches. I’d highly recommend checking out Flag Beach instead of crowding around the beach in the center of Corralejo. It’s a lot more spacious and you’ll get to see a lot more windsurfing and kitesurfing which is great fun to watch!
Have you ever been to Fuerteventura? What did you think? Do you have a holiday destination that you continuously go back to?
